FENCING NEWS - Three fencers from Eden excelled at the recent national championship held in Polokwane.
Tyla Rae Glynn won a silver medal in u.15 epeé, Britney Adonis won a bronze medal in u.20 epeé, and Herschelle Appels achieved an 8th place out of 32 in u.17 epeé. It was only the third time that Tyla Rae and Herschelle took part in any competition.
Britney and Herschelle are development fencers from Touwsranten, and have to continually overcome obstacles in order to compete.
Their community and families are pillars of strength in their efforts to find ways to raise the money that is needed to participate.
Fencing is a lifeline for these youngsters in that it keeps them off the streets, helps them to set goals, teaches them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and grows their self-esteem.
The next goal for these fencers is to up their performance at the WC Open in December in Cape Town.
Individual planning was done with every fencer after the national championship, from setting short-term and long-term goals to ways how to assist with fundraising.
