GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Eden District's karate team proudly represented their region at the Western Cape Karate Elite and Open Tournament in Cape Town on Saturday 7 February.
The prestigious competition drew some of the province's most skilled karatekas, offering both elite and developing athletes the opportunity to measure themselves against high-level opposition.
The Eden squad consisted of a committed group of karatekas selected from various dojos across the district, taking part in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) across multiple age and weight divisions.
Throughout the tournament, the karatekas displayed discipline, technical precision and strong fighting spirit. Eden's head coach, Shihan Mareon Ferndale, assisted by Sensei Samantha Williams, accompanied the team and praised the competitors for their resilience and composure on the tatami.
The Western Cape Karate Elite and Open Tournament is considered a key fixture on the provincial competitive calendar, attracting entrants from numerous districts and clubs.
Events of this calibre are vital for athlete development, talent identification and preparation for national championships and interprovincial competition.
Eden's karatekas delivered impressive performances, several of them advancing to medal rounds and demonstrating the district's depth of talent.
The team returned home with an outstanding total of 59 medals.
The team's officials expressed their sincere appreciation to the coaches, referees and supporters who contributed to the members' participation. Special thanks were also extended to those parents whose ongoing support enables the karatekas to compete on major stages.
