GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Well-known boxing promoter David Faas wants to organise a big title fight for Mossel Bay for 27 September and revitalise boxing in town.
Faas, based in Cape Town, is known for turning the Oliver Tambo Hall in Khayelitsha into one of South Africa’s foremost boxing venues.
He has organised several major bouts countrywide and also taken South African boxers overseas.
Faas says: "There is no reason why boxing cannot be big in Mossel Bay. There is good potential here. All we need is for the boxers to be consistent."
There has not even been a boxing ring in Mossel Bay, but recently money was acquired from the Lotto and a ring will be established, confirms local trainer Masimphiwe Qatu.
Faas says: "Local fighters will be undercard of the title fight on 27 September." The two Mossel Bay boxers in mind for the "undercard fight" are featherweight Bulelani Ngondeka and flyweight amateur Mbulelo Gubula.
Ngondeka is the best boxer in the Elite Amateur division in the Western Cape. Ngondeka currently trains at Tiger Kai gym in Mossel Bay. Qatu is his trainer.
Ngondeka and Qatu commended Tiger Kai owner Phillip Goodger for his support of boxers in Mossel Bay.
Qatu trains boxers together with fellow trainer Mncedisi Nqenkeza.

Faas points out: "Mossel Bay boxing promoter Terrence Ndanda brought some big fights here. We can do it again. I want to invite some current world champions here with their belts and give a workshop for youngsters. I can assure you we have two future champs here in Ngondeka and Gubula."
A tournament in Plettenberg Bay is being organised for 27 October by Faas. "The tournament will honour the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth. Even in Plett we have champions. The current Western Cape junior flyweight champion, Nwabisile Xolani, lives there.
Plett resident Unathi Mndwana will be fighting for the vacant Western Cape junior bantamweight title."
If you or your company would like to be involved in or sponsor the Mossel Bay title fight on 27 September, contact Faas (072 802 6225) or Qatu (064 099 1955). There will be substantial promotional opportunities for businesses who assist with sponsorship.
