KNYSNA NEWS - Oakhill School recently welcomed Bridge House School from Franschhoek for its annual Winter Season Derby - a memorable, action-packed weekend of sport, culture and camaraderie.
The long-standing tradition, a highlight of the school calendar, brought vibrant sportsmanship, creative talent and exceptional energy to Knysna, as more than 250 visiting students were joined by staff, families and supporters.
Spanning both the prep school and college phases, the weekend showcased remarkable commitment across a wide range of disciplines. The action kicked off on Friday 7 August with intense soccer and hockey fixtures at the Oakhill Sports Campus, alongside spirited debating encounters.
That evening marked a milestone at the DR Church, where learners from both schools delivered a captivating joint cultural showcase. It was the first time Oakhill had hosted the shared music evening, featuring outstanding individual and group performances from both schools.
While the visiting learners were hosted by welcoming Oakhill families, the evening also included a dinner for 60 staff members at DryDock Restaurant, overlooking the Knysna Waterfront.
Saturday 8 August saw the sporting competition resume across the hockey, netball and soccer fields, while an exciting mountain-biking event took place on the Oakhill Sports Campus track, alongside orienteering challenges.
With 18 college teams and six prep teams competing, there was plenty for both communities to celebrate. Yet beyond the fierce competition and impressive performances, the true triumph was the strong sense of togetherness. From the sporting fields and cultural venues to local homes opening their doors to visitors, the derby fostered meaningful connections, rekindled old friendships and forged new ones.
Ultimately, the weekend delivered a celebration of sport, culture, connection and genuine camaraderie - qualities that have come to define the strong relationship between Oakhill and Bridge House, a tradition that has now spanned well over a decade.
