KNYSNA NEWS - Every March, Oakhill School in Knysna sends its Grade 10 students on the life-changing Oakhill Odyssey.
This 21-day adventure takes them across nearly 400 kilometers of the Garden Route and Langkloof, where they hike and cycle through diverse landscapes, forests and mountains, and kayak in rivers and lakes.
More than just a physical challenge, the Odyssey is a transformative journey.
Students push themselves to their limits, discovering their own resilience and strength along the way.
The programme emphasises personal growth, with moments of reflection and quiet time spent in nature.
Deep connections
Along with their physical accomplishments, students develop leadership skills, forge deep connections with peers and reflect on their emotional and spiritual journeys.
Each participant carries a diary featuring an inspiring message from the Head of College, sharing that "An Odyssey is a long and eventful journey or experience. You have 21 days to enjoy a special time of personal development, both physical and emotional".
"Growth seldom takes place in one's comfort zone. Keep going. Keep laughing. Keep a diary. Be positive. Be kind. Be safe!"
Write to future selves
A highlight of the Odyssey is the 36-hour solo experience, where students write letters to their parents, the Head of School and their future selves. These letters are returned to them a year later, sparking powerful memories of their growth.
Since its inception in 2011, the Oakhill Odyssey has become a benchmark for similar programmes across the country, offering students an unforgettable and life-changing adventure.
