KNYSNA NEWS - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has wished all budding Grade 1 and Grade R learners in the Knysna and Plett region "the very best for the start of their school career".
The new learning adventure for the youngsters starts next week on Wednesday 15 January, when they enter "big school".
Bronagh Hammond, the director of communication for the WCED, said the exact number of Grade 1s starting school in the region had yet to be determined.
Survey
"We will only know the official numbers after the 10-day snap survey as per the (education) district," she said.
"While there were just over 11 000 learners in Grade 1 in Eden and Central Karoo district (in 2024)", the official number for Knysna and Plett in 2025 "remains to be seen".
"Preparing for the school year requires a lot of planning and cooperation from schools, suppliers and officials.
'Delivered essential items'
"We want teaching and learning to take place from day one, and therefore have, well in advance, procured and delivered essential items for school readiness," Hammond said.
"This includes textbooks, stationery orders, furniture and equipment.
"We are also ready to tackle any new requirements that may come in, due to late applications or unexpected demand or needs in certain communities.
Role of parents
"Parents also have a role to play in preparing for the new school year.
"We appeal to parents to ensure that they refer to past correspondence from their child’s school regarding what will be required of them to prepare accordingly for the start of the school year.
"This weekend is the last opportunity to get outstanding uniform items and stationery (in fee-paying schools), where required.
'Earlier bedtime schedules'
"It is also time to start preparing our children for next week, by reverting back to earlier bedtime schedules and daily reading activities.
"Let’s make 2025 a successful and positive school year!
"We wish all our Grade 1 and Grade R learners the very best for the start of their school career.
"May they enjoy their new school environments, create new friends and of course, expand their interest and love for learning!"
