PROPERTY NEWS - The Western Cape Department of Human Settlements notes with concern that housing beneficiaries often cannot be located when their title deeds are ready for transfer.
For example, last month the Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers, was only able to locate 18 of the 200 housing beneficiaries at the Delft Precinct Development who received houses in 2014. This is an ongoing phenomenon.
The backlog of title deed handovers is often due to beneficiaries who can no longer be traced.
Housing beneficiaries must ensure that the Provincial Department of Human Settlements has their correct contact details in order to process and hand over their title deeds.
Matlhodi Maseko, MPP says, "I want to make an appeal to each and every resident of the Western Cape who has received a house from the Provincial Department of Human Settlements to please verify their details at their nearest housing office. We must urgently address the title deeds backlog in the province, but we cannot do so if housing beneficiaries cannot be traced.
"Receiving a title deed is a crucial step in providing property and homeownership as part of post-apartheid redress. Residents must please ensure that the correct information is supplied to the department so that we can carry out this process cooperatively".
