KNYSNA NEWS - The DA in Knysna has voted against “greedy” salary increases for councillors, passed at a special council meeting on Friday 25 October, without the concurrence of MEC for local government Anton Bredell.
Sharon Sabbagh, the DA Knysna caucus chief whip and spokesperson on finance, said the “greedy” salary increases were voted for by the ANC/PA/PBI/EFF coalition-led council “to implement substantial salary increases for councillors effective from 1 July 2024, which includes a nearly R1m annual remuneration for executive mayor Aubrey Tsengwa”.
'Financial crisis'
Sabbagh said the DA “strongly condemns this decision, at a time when the municipality is suffering a severe financial crisis, an inability to deliver basic services, and a backlog of critical, unfilled vacancies that undermines the daily lives and wellbeing of Knysna’s residents”.
