KNYSNA NEWS - Young book lovers across the community put their reading knowledge to the test when Oakhill School hosted the sixth annual Phendulani Quiz in September.
The quiz brought together 11 teams from six local primary schools, and the learners competed on their knowledge of the books they had read during the year.
Oakhill welcomed teams from Concordia, Hornlee, Fraaisig, Chris Nissen, Thembelitsha and Sunridge primary schools. Earlier in the year, each participating school had received a dedicated set of 10 books to read in preparation for the competition.
The result was a lively day of challenging questions, spirited competition and, most importantly, a celebration of reading.
Chris Nissen Primary delivered an impressive performance, claiming first place for the second consecutive year, as well as taking second place with another team. Thembelitsha Primary finished third.
The Phendulani Quiz was developed by Marj Brown as a local spin-off of the Kids' Lit Quiz, with the aim of encouraging young learners to discover the enjoyment and value of reading.
Brown's continued dedication to promoting literacy and a love of books was acknowledged with heartfelt thanks from Oakhill.
The annual quiz has become an opportunity for schools to come together in a spirit of friendly competition while celebrating something that can open countless doors for young people: a love of reading.
