PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Police and the Bitou Municipality are investigating the circumstances surrounding the electrocution of a five-year-old boy in Kranshoek recently.
The municipality's communications team confirmed that the boy died after gaining access to live electricity through a vandalised electrical box on the Kranshoek sports field.
"The child was playing with his friends when this regretful incident took place. He was taken to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries," the team said.
"This is indeed a tragedy and the Bitou Municipality expresses its heartfelt condolences to the extended family for their loss. It is very sad and tragic that such a young boy should lose his life under such circumstances."
They said initial reports indicate that the electrical box was vandalised in "a very clever manner", which allowed for unauthorised access to live electricity. "Unfortunately, this is also how the five-year-old boy gained access even though the municipality's padlock was still in place."
The matter is currently in the hands of the police and will be investigated further. The municipality will also conduct an internal inquest into the matter.
