KNYSNA NEWS - Well known for its cultural offering, Oakhill nurtures the joy of learning through the arts - from their youngest students in Little Oaks to matric graduates. All students at Oakhill engage in visual art, dramatic art and music as part of their curriculum until the end of Grade 9.
Thereafter they have a choice to take any, or all, of these as a formal subject for their matric IEB examinations.
As part of their visual art studies, the Grade 9s recently explored surrealism through designing and creating a surreal sculpture. Surrealism is defined as the forcing together of unrelated objects to create a dream-like image.
The students were challenged to use their imagination and sculpt a unique integrated work that contained both animate and inanimate elements. Their medium was paper clay with the option of including some found objects.
The sculptures created were an impressive menagerie of dreamlike creations.
The Grade 9 students also investigated the various devices of perspective used by artists to create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface.
Within the space, the students created a portal to create an alternate reality, a dream within a dream. They worked in pencil crayons and showed their understanding of colour theory by layering every colour with other colours to create a wonderful range of colourful surreal dreamscapes.
