KNYSN ANEWS - The team from Ocean Odyssey is calling on Knysna residents to get up and show their support for this year's Spring Clean Greater Knysna set to take place next weekend, marking the third instalment of this initiative.
Due to Covid-19, participating teams will be restricted to a maximum of 10 people.
This year has seen particularly good interest considering the circumstances, with at least 17 confirmed teams of 10 people per group that will be covering Greater Knysna area on the day.
"The areas we are covering are not only the regions around the estuary but inland as well, like Concordia, Karatara and Knysna Main Road, because at the end of the day it all lands up in the ocean," said organiser Teresa da Mata. "Our teams will consist of a range of very passionate local individuals including two teams from Allsound and a team from the SANparks Honorary Rangers".
Each team will be allocated an area of Greater Knysna that they may choose, but if their area has already been chosen by another group, organisers will reallocate so as to avoid overcrowding of one space and to spread the reach of the clean-up.
"This event is not only to clean up but to also educate the public and make them more aware as to where their waste ends up. We hope that it makes them think twice before walking past a piece of litter after participating in an event like this," Da Mata said.
"I like to think that every time I do this event, not only are we managing to remove loads of litter from the area but at the same time we are educating kids and even grown-ups on how bad our impact is on our precious environment."
The event will take place on Saturday 19 September, and there will be no fixed time. Instead, groups will be asked to do their part for at least an hour between 07:00 and 15:00.
