KNYSNA NEWS - The Smutsville soccer club, Smuts United, was crowned as the Knysna Local Football Association (KLFA) Easter Tournament champion after sinking African Eagles (Sedgefield) 2-0 in the final on Monday afternoon, 21 April, at the Safe-Hub's sports complex in Knysna.
The lanky forward, Brandon Kasanya, and Corne' Melite contributed the two goals for the Smutsville team. Smuts United are currently playing in the elite division, the Safa Eden Hollywoodbets Regional League, while the African Eagles are plying their trade in the KLFA Promotional League.
Solid performance
Kasanya delivered a solid performance, employing his regional league experience to lead his side from the front. The final started on fire with the Smutsville team looking very smart on the ball and putting more pressure on African Eagles' back line.
Kasanya opened the score, making it 1-0 within the first five minutes. Both teams were playing attacking football. Eagles players were chasing the game trying to get their first goal to equalise, but they could not break through the Smuts United back line.
Great touches
The second half saw both teams playing with skill, with the Sedgefield side employing their strength on the ball and Smuts United strong on the flanks. Corne' Melite of Smuts United launched a strong attack and managed to score a beautiful goal, doubling their lead to 2-0.
The Eagles tried their best to come back into the game, but again failed to break through the stubborn defence of Smuts United.
The game ended 2-0 with Smuts United bagging the first prize of R16 000 and African Eagles taking home R11 000 as their second prize.
The third- and fourth-placed teams went home with R5 000 each and the teams that placed fifth to eighth received R1 000 each.
