GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - People who work with seals or regularly spend time along the Garden Route coastline are being asked to take part in a Wits University study that could help inform future approaches to rabies prevention.
Researchers from the University of the Witwatersrand are conducting a survey to better understand people's exposure to Cape fur seals, their knowledge of seal rabies, rabies vaccination coverage and what they would do if bitten or scratched by a seal.
The research is particularly relevant following confirmed cases of rabies among Cape fur seals and renewed warnings for members of the public to avoid approaching or interacting with seals.
The study is aimed at adults who may encounter seals through their work or recreational activities. This includes veterinarians and animal welfare workers, rangers, sea rescue personnel, lifeguards, boat operators, fishers, surfers, divers and beachgoers.
Researchers have so far received about 200 responses, but are hoping to reach 625 participants to provide reliable results.
Findings could inform authorities
According to the research team, people exposed to seals are not currently classified as a high-risk group in national rabies vaccination guidelines.
The study aims to establish the extent of potential exposure among these groups, as well as their knowledge of rabies prevention and levels of vaccination coverage.
The findings will be shared with health and conservation authorities and could provide useful evidence when future rabies prevention measures are considered.
The timing of the study is also significant as the Garden Route heads towards the busy festive season, when beaches, harbours and marine tourism activities attract considerably more people.
The anonymous online survey takes about five minutes to complete and is open to people aged 18 and older.
What to do after a seal bite or scratch
People should keep their distance from seals and should not attempt to touch or handle them. Anyone bitten or scratched by a seal should wash the wound thoroughly and seek medical attention immediately.
