Sea Rescue reminds bathers that spring high tides result in very strong rip-currents.
Rocks that are normally easily accessible are engulfed by waves.
Bathers and anglers should be extremely cautious and a special warning goes out to learners on their school break.
Surf Lifeguards are deployed during the school break and bathers should follow the lifeguards instructions at beaches.
Last week Wilderness NSRI trained their rescue swimmers and crew in techniques to read, understand and utilize rip-currents. Our crew discussed tides, wave heights and the factors influencing these.
Rip-currents can be identified as:
- A channel of churning, choppy water.
- An area having a notable difference in water colour.
- A line of foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily seaward.
- A break in the incoming wave pattern
