KNYSNA NEWS - SANParks has conducted two types of assessments to guide future management of the Knysna elephant population.
A sociological survey, which received 74% of the 500 contacts, supports the introduction of more elephants to the Garden Route elephant range, but many acknowledge the complexity of the situation requires expert input.
Respondents support the re-introduction of elephants due to ecological, cultural, and historical values, but caution against commercial interest.
Most respondents recommend a cautious management approach informed by elephant specialists, landowners, and conservation authorities.
Ecological studies examined the elephant's physiological condition, behavior in response to human activities, and potential human-wildlife conflict areas.
Results showed that the female elephant's hormone system is functioning well, with low stress hormone levels in areas with low human presence and high stress hormone levels in areas with high human presence.
Both social and ecological studies support low-risk, cautious, and minimal disturbance management options, with experts' input being acknowledged.
