Rain cannot dampen women's spirit

KNYSNA NEWS - Outside the Christen Gemeente Kerk in Hornlee, the rain came down in torrents. Inside, more than 160 women from across South Africa were singing, dancing, waving flags and lifting their voices in celebration.

Women from all nine provinces, as well as the greater Knysna area, gathered in Knysna from 7 to 9 August for the Women with a Passion National Conference - a three-day celebration of faith, resilience, healing and empowerment.

It was the first time Knysna had hosted a conference of this magnitude. It was a significant milestone for the Hornlee-based organisation, which is celebrating 14 years of Women with a Passion.

From young women to seniors, the delegates arrived with their varied stories and life experiences, but shared a common purpose: to encourage one another, confront some of the challenges facing women and leave strengthened for the road ahead.

This three-day faith-based conference was not built around traditional speakers, but around women sharing their real-life journeys. Through heartfelt testimonies of overcoming adversity, healing and restoration, the delegates were reminded that their own stories have value and purpose.

The result was an atmosphere of unity, authenticity and spiritual renewal.

Sunday afternoon's gathering at the Hornlee church captured the spirit of the weekend. Despite the pouring rain outside, the atmosphere inside was charged with energy as gospel music filled the church, delegates danced and waved flags, and speakers shared messages of hope and inspiration.

Mental wellness, physical health, emotional well-being and gender-based violence were among the issues discussed, reflecting the very real pressures many women face in their daily lives.

The weekend's message of empowerment also extended beyond the conference venue and into the Hornlee community.

In partnership with Knysna Municipality, meals were distributed to 250 community members - a gesture that reflected the organisation's emphasis on serving others with dignity, compassion and purpose.

Juanita Jansen, one of the main organisers, said the conference was about far more than bringing women together for a weekend.

"It is a story of faith, hope and impact," she said, describing how one woman's faith and compassion had grown from a small gathering into a national ministry that has touched countless lives.

"The conference was all about restoring, empowering and equipping the delegates," Jansen said.

For Jansen and the organisers, the significance of the gathering lay in the connections forged and the renewed strength women took home with them.

The weekend culminated in a graduation and recognition ceremony for participants, followed by a celebratory dinner.

The conference was a reminder that sometimes the most powerful form of support is simply knowing that others are walking the same road - and that no woman has to face life's challenges alone.

The organisers thanked all those who contributed to the event, including Knysna Municipality and other sponsors and partners whose support helped make the national gathering possible.

Women with a Passion continues to run community outreach initiatives, conferences, mentoring and youth programmes aimed at strengthening individuals and communities.

And if the downpour outside on Sunday proved anything, it was that pouring rain could not extinguish the warmth, faith and enthusiasm of women determined to lift one another higher.
