KNYSNA NEWS - All 19 contestants for the Mr Gay World title were welcomed by mayor Eleanore Bouw-Spies at Villa Castollini during a media conference on Thursday, 24 May.
“As we are surrounded by beauty, I thank you for your choice of Knysna and welcome to everyone. Here we embrace diversity, we accept people, we have a place for the LGBTQ+ community, and may this event grow from strength to strength as we work together to ensure this success. Knysna is rooted in its residents, and we want you to consider Knysna as your home as you experience our hospitality,” she said during the opening address.
Benediction Zubane head of marketing at Mango Airlines, also said a few words as the main sponsors.
“We are happy to bring everyone here to beautiful occasion. As Mango Airlines we saw it as part of our strategy and befitting to sponsor this event. Our partnership will be a long term one as we subscribe to the values of diversity,” he said.
Eric Butter, president of Mr Gay World, thanked the mayor and all sponsors.
“This year is a milestone as it’s our tenth year of hosting this event. We have created a platform for all to come here, learn and apply what they've learnt back home. This contest is not about wanting to be someone, it is about wanting to do something, it is about reminding people that we do exist, it is about creating awareness, and creating ambassadors and role models,” he said, adding that he loves South Africa, the amazing scenery and amazing people - thus his choice to bring this event to Knysna.
Elmay Bouwer, chairperson of Knysna Tourism, said that Knysna was excited to welcome all 19 delegates.
“Every town has something special, and Knysna is heartbeat of garden route. I have been watching how all of you have spent the week, and one thing touched my heart is when you got down and dirty at Pledge nature reserve - I will remember this always. It was burnt down during the fires and every bit of help goes a long way,” she said.
Bouwer also said love is the only way to conquer life, and she wished everyone to experience all colours of the LGBTQ flag.
“Tell people colourful stories about Knysna, be global ambassadors. I wish you all the best. And remember, sometimes we have an amazing experience waiting for us, and sometimes it is right in front of us. Good luck to everyone”.
The Mr Gay pageant and crowing takes place on Saturday night at Villa Castollini, starting at 18:00.
