KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Schools Heritage Week concluded on a high note last week with a memorable guided walk through the Pezula Private Nature Reserve, giving learners a chance to connect with nature and local heritage.
A group of 23 enthusiastic Grade 4 and 5 learners from Riverwood Primary took part in the adventure, exploring Sparrebosch Nature Reserve, a 45-hectare Afromontane forest nestled within Pezula.
The bus journey itself offered scenic views of the surrounding fynbos, rolling hills and even a distant glimpse of the ocean.
Along the way, learners were excited to spot a small herd of bontebok grazing peacefully.
At the reserve, the group was warmly welcomed by Joggie van Staden and Madeleine Loots and guided by Mark Grootboom and Carlon Jumaat, who introduced the children to the rich biodiversity of the area.
The walk meandered through mossy forest paths lined with keurboom, witels and yellowwood trees, under canopies of vines, and past signs of forest life such as spiderwebs, birds and ancient fig tree roots.
The outing ended with free play and time spent meeting horses on the peaceful "Fields of Dreams" - a perfect ending to a morning full of discovery.
The event was co-ordinated by the Ubumama Outdoor Education Project, which expressed their gratitude to the Pezula estate manager and board members for the opportunity to visit this hidden gem of Knysna.
