KNYSNA NEWS - Three exceptional educators from Knysna have been honoured at the provincial leg of the National Teaching Awards, recognising their outstanding contributions to education and community upliftment.
The provincial award ceremony was held on 15 August.
Roché Witbooi, teacher at Concordia Primary School, received the Excellence in Primary School Leadership award. Born and raised in Knysna, and inspired by a family of teachers, Witbooi has dedicated her career to nurturing learners and empowering those around her.
Known for her compassionate leadership, Witbooi has created a holistic support system for learners by partnering with organisations such as the Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching (KILT), local NGOs, and community members.
Her approach ensures that learners are cared for academically, emotionally, and socially.
"It takes a village to raise a child," she said, a philosophy clearly reflected in her collaborative efforts and community-driven impact. Reflecting on her journey, Witbooi said: "May my fingerprint never fade from the lives I have touched."
Also recognised was Kirsten Tomé of Fraaisig Primary School, who received the award for Excellence in Technology-enhanced Teaching and Learning. Tomé has been at the forefront of digital innovation in the classroom, using technology to foster creativity, engagement, and essential future-ready skills among her learners.
"I am deeply honoured to have received this award," said Tomé. "It's a reflection of the incredible support and teamwork that surrounds me." She expressed heartfelt thanks to her principal, her colleagues, Circuit 4, and the Eden and Central Karoo District for their continued support.
"For my learners, using technology is about more than just tools, it's about discovery, expression, and preparing for the future," she added.
Chanté Manuel, educator at Knysna High School, was the first runner-up in the Excellence in Secondary School teaching category. "Being first runner-up in the Western Cape for the National Teaching Awards is a humbling honour," Manuel said.
"I am grateful for the acknowledgment and this achievement motivates me to continue making a positive impact on my students' lives and striving for excellence in teaching. Thank you to my family and school community for supporting me in this journey."
