PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - To keep the cycle of recycling going in Bitou while the municipality appoints a new contractor, skips are being put in strategic places to encourage recycling among residents.
Recently the municipality announced that recycling would not be collected in coming weeks due to "operational circumstances beyond the municipality's control".
Acting Municipal Manager Victor Felton said that new tender specifications for the collection of recyclable waste in Bitou are currently in process and had reached the first of three stages for bid committees to consider.
For the interim, the municipality had advertised a Request for Quotations (RFQ). "Unfortunately, all bids received exceeded the maximum threshold as allowed by the municipality's Supply Chain Management policy," Felton said. "The RFQ will now be re-advertised, and the finalisation of this process will be prioritised."
Skip bins are being placed in various areas across Bitou on specific days.
One will be placed at Jakkalskraal on the Airport Road and another opposite the Sasol garage in Harkerville on Mondays.
On Tuesdays, a skip will also be placed on Challenge Drive and in Poortjies next to the pump station.
On Wednesdays there will be a skip opposite Jument Park in Longships and another on the corner of Rondebosch and Redford in the Crags, as well as at the entrance of the Engen garage next to Kurland.
On Fridays, a skip will be placed in Wittedrift next to the shops.
"Residents are assured that skip bins will be removed on the same day that they are placed and will not be left in those areas, as the purpose is only for the disposal of recyclable waste. Residents are urged to refrain from disposing of household waste in the skip bins. Collection of household waste will take place as per the usual schedule."
