PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS – In Bitou, while the atmosphere was electric, the message was serious.
Bitou Municipality hosted its Youth Day celebrations in the form of a concert at Central Beach on Friday 16 June.
Among the treats for the hundreds of youngsters that gathered for the event, included performances by big names in the South African music industry including Prince Kaybee, Soa Matrix and Biggy. They shared the stage with local talent and master of ceremonies, Garden Route funny man Moses Williams's alter ego Ouma Sarie.
During his Youth Day address at the event Bitou Mayor Dave Swart tasked the youth of today to be as brave as the youth of 1976. He also reminded them that they had a voice they could use through voting.
"It is through the vote of the youth next year in May 2024 that we can create change in South Africa and return the country into the economic force that it was and should be," Swart said
His message was echoed by the Youth and Sport Development Officer, Duncan Meyer. He said young people of today were less interested in taking up opportunities.
"The youth have lost the fight for their future," Meyer said. He encouraged the youth to attend critical municipal meetings where they can give mandates to political parties.
"I urge you to take yourself and your future seriously and start living for you and start dreaming about your future and remember that Bitou Municipality's doors are always open when a helping hand is needed," he added.
