KNYSNA NEWS - A golf day to raise funds for The Living Cornerstone, a registered NPO based in Sedgefield that cares for patients diagnosed with dementia, will be held at the Knysna Golf Club this weekend, on Sunday 27 October.
Entry is R400 per person and includes a welcome pack and a meal. Big prizes can be won in a raffle at the event, which starts at 09:00. For bookings, contact Chris at the golf club on 044 384 1150.
The Living Cornerstone was established in 2013 as a result of an identified need to care for patients diagnosed with dementia. Caring for these patients can be a challenge for someone not trained to do so.
"Currently we accommodate 12 residents who receive 24/7 medical care administered by three registered nurses and 15 trained carers who work in shifts. Our carers undergo training on an ongoing basis to make sure we keep up with the latest trends in the caring field and in the process empowering them to work comfortably and with self-confidence," the team at the care centre said.
'Homely atmosphere'
"We provide the patients with three home-cooked meals and two in-between snack meals daily, prepared by our fulltime cook. Our laundry is done on site and the housekeeping is done by two fulltime general workers.
"Our aim is to provide our patients with a safe and homely atmosphere in order to respect their dignity. We have to buy all our medical equipment needed and at the moment we are in the process of replacing all our old hospital beds with brand new beds.
"Our wheelchairs and commodes have to be maintained in order to make sure that this equipment is safe to use. We purchase all the cleaning materials needed and food for our residents.
'Adhere to regulations'
"We rely on donations and income generated from our fundraising activities in order to maintain our property and equipment.
"Our facility is upgraded on a regular basis to ensure we maintain a safe and homely environment. We have to adhere to the regulations set out to us by the Department of Social Development and we get audited on a regular basis. As the management team, we report to the board on a monthly basis.
Fundraising events
"Our annual big fundraising events include our Women's Day High Tea event and our Golf Day. We sell pancakes on a regular basis outside our local Pick n Pay and we make use of any opportunity which might arise to do fundraising.
"We have placed 'Blessing Trolleys' at our local Spar and Pick n Pay and the community places food etc in these trolleys for our use.
"Our facility manager, Marietjie Digue, was recently interviewed on the radio station Radio Sonder Grense, and as a result of this, a total renovation of our kitchen was done with the assistance of sponsors countrywide.
'Thanks to contributors'
"Invited guests were amazed by the end-result at the official opening of our brand new kitchen.
"We want to sincerely thank the following companies/organisations who contributed to this amazing blessing: Heunis Plumbing and Electrical, Pro Granite, Paintsmiths, Tranacon, Sedgefield Christian Church, St Francis United Church, NG Church Sedgefield, The Culinarium, Nicolson Russell, Eden Classic Car Club, Sedge Cabinets, UCAN, Stirling Plumbing, E4 Electrical, Knysna municipality and Carpe Musicam."
