KNYSNA NEWS - In a creative effort to address behavioural challenges among its learners, Fraaisig Primary School has launched an inspiring gardening initiative at the heart of its school grounds.
More than just a beautification project, the garden is cultivating values such as responsibility, teamwork, and respect among learners.
Deputy principal Ethon Alexander explained that the gardening project is just one of several uplifting initiatives the school has implemented in partnership with the Sinethemba Youth Development Centre.
"These efforts are focused on eradicating behavioural problems and providing learners with a positive, educational environment," he said.
Principal Constance Stuurman added that the garden has had a noticeable impact on learners, particularly those who have been struggling.
"The garden has really assisted with the upliftment of these learners' behaviour and personality. It gives them a sense of purpose and pride," she said.
But the garden's impact goes beyond the school gates. As part of giving back to the community, Fraaisig Primary donates portions of its harvest to a nearby old-age home.
The school also sells fresh vegetables to teachers and community members and use the proceeds to purchase new seedlings, making the project largely self-sustainable.
The upkeep of the garden is supported by staff employed through the Western Cape Education Department, under the National School Nutrition Programme. With their help, the garden has been growing strong in the backyard of the school for over five years.
Despite its success, the project does face challenges. Over weekends, the school grounds are sometimes accessed illegally by members of the public who remove vegetables from the garden. To reduce these losses, the school now harvests weekly, depending on crop readiness.
Still, the school remains committed to the project's mission. "It's more than just growing vegetables," said Stuurman. "We are growing future leaders - one seed at a time."
