PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A 24-year-old man who drowned in the lagoon at Nature’s Valley on Saturday, 10 January, at about 16:30 has been identified as Deon Mase (24) from Kurland Village.
According to Southern Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies, Mase went swimming when he disappeared in the water.
He was later identified at the scene. In an earlier statement, the municipality confirmed a tragic drowning incident involving an adult at the lagoon.
Bystanders reported that a German visitor witnessed the incident and saw a person waving their arms in the water. People rushed in to try to rescue the man, but his body was found about 15 minutes later and brought to shore.
Spies said Plettenberg Bay police have opened an inquest docket. Emergency personnel were called to the scene, and upon arrival police were directed to the body, which was declared dead by medical personnel on site.
A post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death will be conducted later this week. Investigations continue.
Bitou Mayor Jessica Kamkam extended her sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
