PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Local law enforcers have noticed an increase in certain crimes in and around Plett in recent weeks and caution residents to be vigilant and secure their valuables.
Lisa Nagel of Plett.Watch, the local neighbourhood watch group, said reports indicated that there have been more cases of theft out of vehicles. "People are leaving valuables in plain sight in their vehicles and this is a big temptation," she said.
"Please ensure that there is nothing in your vehicle that can be removed. The cost and effort of replacing a window is often more than the items stolen."
There has also been a rise in reports of property crimes, including home burglaries. "It is imperative that we all take control of our safety and security and ensure that we are all prepared and secured in our homes.
"Not only do you need to secure the inside of your home, but also any possessions that can be stolen from your garden."
She urged residents to ensure their garden gates were locked, as well as security gates, doors and windows. "Also, do not leave anything of value close to windows where they can be 'fished' out, or are a temptation to opportunistic thieves."
Another crime that was a thorn in the side for crime fighters was fraud and scams.
"Police have been inundated with cases, and sadly, most cannot be solved. Do not buy anything online unless you are 100% certain that you are dealing with a secure and legitimate site. Our police are dealing with cases worth thousands and thousands of rands," Nagel said.
"Do not give any information to anyone who calls you, supposedly from your bank. If you are called, put the phone down and call your bank back, on a number you have for your bank. Scammers are often smooth-talking, friendly individuals who will try to soft-soap you into giving your information. Do not fall into their trap."
She also again urged residents not to accept assistance from any stranger when using an ATM. "If anyone comes close to you, ask them to back away. If you feel threatened or in danger, remove your card from the machine and leave immediately."
Local police have confirmed the rise in certain crimes.
