At its launch speakers, addressing representatives from the Knysna Municipality, Knysna Community Police Forum, Department of Correctional Services, Department of Social Development, National Prosecuting Authority, non-governmental organisations, local churches and members of the community, reiterated the impact that violence has on households and communities. A woman who is currently serving a sentence in the Oudtshoorn Correctional Services as a result of her retaliation against a man's abuse, emphasised the importance of speaking out against abuse at all times, not only for the duration of the campaign.
Knysna Police Station Commander, Colonel Nolan Michaels, expressed his concern about violent crimes committed against women and children, urging all residents to break the silence on abuse.
Local artists entertained an appreciative audience who spontaneously joined in the singing and dancing. The launch programme was concluded by door-to-door visits by different officials at Joodsekamp, Ethembeni and Concordia.
The Blow the Whistle Against Abuse campaign created awareness with a walk through Knysn'a Main Street on Friday, November 26, from the Knysna Police Station to the Knysna Mall, with participants distributing informative pamphlets and whistles to the public.
Other activities during the 16-day campaign included more door-to-door visits, workshops, information sessions and visits to schools and crèches.
The Knysna Police thank all role-players for their contribution in ensuring the success of the campaign.
