PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou Primary School learners received a special treat this week as Mayor Dave Swart and other ward councillors read stories to local children in celebration of World Read Aloud Day on 1 February.
World Read Aloud Day is a programme rolled out by LitWorld - a non-profit organisation which promotes reading among the youth. Its main aim is to improve the lives of youngsters and their communities through storytelling.
With the help of Bitou's municipal libraries, local children had the opportunity to participate in this global programme.
Bitou's municipal communication team said library staff visited various schools in Plettenberg Bay together with a ward councillor.
The councillors read a story written by Tumisang Shongwe, illustrated by Rico, to the learners.
The programme's most popular guest reader was Swart. He not only read the story, but also tested the children's comprehension skills, by asking the young bookworms a few questions about the story.
He also encouraged the youngsters to read more.
