Bitou Golden Games celebrates active ageing

PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Nearly 200 elderly and disabled sporting enthusiasts took part in the annual Bitou Golden Games, hosted by Bitou Municipality at the Piesang Valley Sports Field last week.

According to the municipality, the event showcased a competitive spirit, thrilling games and unexpected victories as participants battled it out in various sporting codes.

The Golden Games are part of a national programme aimed at promoting active ageing and encouraging healthier lifestyles among senior citizens and people with disabilities.

The programme extends beyond Bitou, with winners progressing to regional, provincial and national competitions.

Participants competed in jukskei, 100m and 200m run/walk events and other indigenous games. Winners will represent Bitou at the regional games in Mossel Bay on 10 September.

The event was attended by Mayor Jessica Kamkam, Speaker Mavis Busakwe and councillors Annelise Olivier, Claude Terblanche and Renecia Willemse.

The municipality said the games also provided an opportunity for elderly residents from across Bitou's wards to strengthen friendships and reconnect with old acquaintances.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Maria 'Aunty Flessie' Pienaar, chairperson of the New Horizons Pensioners Club, thanked the municipality for its continued support of elderly clubs.

Pienaar said the day was about more than sport and refreshments, offering residents an opportunity to reconnect and share tips on maintaining a healthy body and ageing gracefully.

"Since 2017, the municipality has not let us down. Even though there are ups and downs, the municipality still delivers," she said.
