KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna SAPS and the Western Cape police management have praised Sgt Jo-Ann Benn, a police officer from Knysna who went above and beyond the call of duty last weekend when she assisted with the delivery of a healthy baby girl in White Location.
According to a police statement, Benn’s vigilance ensured that the baby was safely delivered after she and her colleagues responded to a distress call from the baby’s grandmother.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, Knysna Crime Prevention Unit members on patrol in White Location were stopped by a woman at about 02:20 on Sunday 27 September.
The woman, who was the mother of the pregnant woman, asked the police to contact an ambulance, indicating that the situation was urgent. “The members immediately responded and accompanied the concerned grandmother to her home.
On arrival, they found the pregnant woman already in labour, apparently unaware that she was about to give birth,” Spies said. Benn helped calm the woman and assisted and guided the mother through the delivery.
Spies said the members remained at the scene until paramedics arrived, when the mother and baby were handed over to medical personnel, and then continued with their duties.
The mother and baby were discharged from hospital on Monday 28 September. Western Cape police management praised the members for going beyond their normal duties to assist with the safe delivery.
