PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou Speaker Mavis Busakwe responded on 20 November to enquiries sent regarding housing applications found dumped in Pinetrees in August, saying the matter has been attended to and “there was no evidence that Councillors or Municipal officials acted unlawfully, unprocedural, or unethically”.
At issue are housing applications made in 2007 for houses in Ebenezer portion 20 that were found dumped in an area called Pinetrees on 21 August.
According to Ruduwhan Plaatjies, the chairperson of the New Horizons Community Forum, the discarding of the documents on open land was a dereliction of duty by a municipal official - resulting in a contravention of the Protection of Personal Information Act (Popia), because personal information of more than 100 people was compromised.
Busakwe however said the following: “When perusing the documents at the dumping site, it appeared that some of those documents were linked to a political party (ANC) and old municipal documents.
“As the Speaker of the council, I am satisfied that this matter has been sufficiently dealt with in line with delegated authority and due process.
Consequently, there is no need for further intervention or reopening of the matter from the Office of the Speaker. I trust this clarifies the municipality’s position and brings this matter to a close.”
