Sergeant Chris Spies, Southern Cape police spokesperson, confirmed that three men, aged 26, 29 and 31, were arrested on murder charges the morning after the killing. They are currently out on bail and are due to appear in court for their trial on 24 November."
Knysna Detectives are investigating a murder case following the death of Ricardo de Vos on 23 February. The victim sustained multiple injuries following an altercation with a group. He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead. The investigation is ongoing, and this office is not at liberty to divulge further details at this stage," Spies said.
De Vos' sister, Elize Gallant, described the extent of his injuries.
"My brother's face was deformed and restructured as a result of a brick the suspects allegedly threw at his head, causing a fractured skull. I had to prepare him for his funeral - a sight I will never forget. He was hardly recognisable, and our family could not even pay our last respects with an open casket."
De Vos was reportedly off duty but had allowed another driver to use the vehicle. This driver invited him to Ngoma Night Club in Knysna Central, planning to transport commuters to Concordia and surrounding areas.
The suspects, allegedly from Hornlee, reportedly wanted to take the taxi.
A dispute over fare escalated, resulting in De Vos being assaulted and struck with a brick before the suspects fled through nearby bushes. Gallant said few witnesses have come forward, reportedly out of fear for their safety.
"He was only doing his job. We are seeking closure and appeal to anyone with information to come forward," pleaded Gallant.
