KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Municipal Traffic Department hosted an awareness campaign for grade 3 learners of Sunridge Primary School on Friday 31 August. The event intended to introduce children to the concept of road safety and to teach them the basics of road safety in a fun and memorable manner.
Studies have shown that children and young people have a high involvement in road accidents, so they must learn to use the road safely. Traffic Officers, Chris van Rensburg and Denver LaVack did not only engage the learners on various road safety tips but also touched on the issue of fighting and bullying at school.
According to Knysna Executive Mayor, Mark Willemse there is no doubt in his mind that creating an active and fun learning environment is important to ensure a lasting, unforgettable experience. This is even more relevant today as road safety education needs to stick in the minds of our children.
Willemse said “I am pleased that the learners displayed excitement during the session. They interacted and were eager to learn about road safety. I would like to thank our officers for this wonderful programme.”
Learners were given road safety learning material and other goodies to take the message home to share with friends and family.
This was the second programme hosted by the Traffic Department. In June learners from Concordia Primary were the first to participate in the launch of the campaign.
Other schools within the Greater Knysna area that wish to have the road safety programme implemented at their school, may contact Superintendent: Jakobus Oktober at 044 -302 6300 or email: joktober@knysna.gov.za.
Please allow for ample time to do the arrangements.
