KNYSNA NEWS - The municipality has announced the appointment of DM Recycling Waste Management to manage recycling in the Knysna municipal area, promising an end to Knysna's recycling woes.
"Our municipal recycling centre is now closed," said Acting Knysna Municipal Manager Dawid Adonis in a statement on Monday. "We request that residents make use of the service provider's facility at T21 Hadeda Street in the industrial area to dispose of recyclable materials."
The municipality will continue its weekly refuse collection from residents and businesses, retaining the use of coloured bags for different recycling purposes.
Adonis said to reduce plastic waste, the municipality will be phasing out black bags while instituting municipal wheelie bins. "Residents who prefer to continue making use of black bags may buy these from the customer care centres, or most local supermarkets," he added.
He stressed that it is important to recycle as the waste created by humans causes air, water and soil pollution, which in turn is harmful to human health, plants and animals. The municipality is also exploring options to involve the private sector in promoting recycling and reducing waste.
