PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - While Plettenberg Bay is known as a tranquil holiday destination, this summer season is all but quiet on the sports front, as the town will be hosting an array of events to cater for all fitness levels.
Kia Summer Slam beach tennis
Until 21 December
One of the highlights on the summer sports programme is the international Kia Summer Slam beach tennis tour which returned to Central Beach this weekend and will run until 21 December. Some of the entrants rank among the world's top beach tennis stars including defending champions Alessandro Calbucci and Michele Cappelletti, who are the men's world number one and two beach tennis players respectively.
Organisers also confirmed that world number four Nikita Burmakin and number five Tommaso Giovannini will also participate alongside some home-grown talent.
BlissFest Yoga Festival
20-22 December
If beach action is not your thrill, the BlissFest Yoga Festival is set to start on 20 December and run until 22 December. The festival will offer a variety of yoga styles and is suitable for all ages over three days of yoga, meditation, chanting and dance.
To guide participants, there will be local and international teachers.
Twilight Run
20 December
On 20 December, runners can take their place at the Plettenberg Bay Country Club golf course for the annual Twilight Run. The 5.5km course undulates through some indigenous forest as well as past many waterways.
To keep the attention off the exhaustion, runners will be treated by beautiful views, including abundant birdlife.
NSRI Fun Beach Run
22 December
Runners can dust off their running shoes once more on 22 December for the annual National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Plett Fun Beach Run in support of the institute's local branch.
Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge
27-30 December
The highlight of the festive sporting activities is undoubtedly the Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge, which will this year take place between 27 and 30 December with 11 events on offer.
On 27 December, activities will kick off with a 10km road run, the Splash and Dash paddling challenge, a 5km beach walk, a mile swim and the 10km surf-ski challenge. These events will kick off at Central Beach.
On 29 December, events move to the Kurland Polo Estate in The Crags with a 21km, 10km and 6km trail run on offer.
The final day on 30 December will also be held at Kurland with a 45km and 25km mountain bike challenge.
Secret Sunrise Tour
28 December
On 28 December the energy levels will shift gear with the Secret Sunrise Garden Route Tour making a stop in Plett.
This popular, early-morning dance event is always a popular one on our summer calendar and will take place on the beach in front of the Beacon Island Hotel.
Floating Fun
28 December
Adventure and thrill seekers or "professional chillers" are in for a treat on the same day for the annual Police Eyewear Float Day. Festinos are encouraged to grab anything that floats and head over to the Island Beach Bar where there will be float competitions and entertainment for all to enjoy.
Plett Polo International
29 December
The festive sports programme ends on a high note with the Plett Polo International at Kurland Estate. Local polo players will go into battle with the rest of South Africa's polo team in an 18-goal match.
The day will end with an afterparty headlined by the popular SA band The Kiffness.
