KNYSNA NEWS - In a time when bullying, and especially cyberbullying, is rife in many countries, learners at Oakhill School were privileged to get savvy by mouth of a pro last week.
As part of the school's week-long anti-bullying campaign and its digital awareness week, the school invited Emma Sadleir, a South African authority on social media law, for a presentation on the subject.
Sadleir is the founder of The Digital Law Company and the talk was facilitated by Sasha Events.
Held in the Oakhill school hall on 18 October, the presentation armed parents, students and teachers with knowledge about internet safety.
Sadleir's talk was engaging and interactive as she covered topics such as understanding legal risks of posting on social media, defamation in the digital realm, safeguarding privacy and the effects of social media use on the well-being of children.
She also introduced parents to a variety of tools to protect their children's safety online.
Recounting numerous cases she had worked on in the past, she made the topic fun and easy to understand.
The talk delved further into understanding the boundaries and legal responsibilities of social media, so that social media users can protect themselves from potential legal consequences.
"We can use the law as an arsenal against a lot of these online crimes that we are faced with today," she said. "It is super empowering to be able to combat negative behaviour online. Digital content is dangerous content because it is out of our control."
