KNYSNA NEWS - On Friday 8 September, 16 eager Eco Club learners of Sunridge Primary School embarked on an exciting excursion to the Knysna Elephant Park.
The trip was an opportunity for the students to connect with nature and learn about the importance of wildlife conservation.
The success of the outing would not have been possible without the dedicated supervision and guidance of teachers Sheune Solomons, Shane Williams and David Sigula, who accompanied the learners throughout the day. The opportunity to visit the Knysna Elephant Park was facilitated by Michael Spies.
During their visit, the learners and teachers had the privilege of observing elephants in their natural habitat and to learn about their behaviour, diet and the challenges they face due to habitat loss and poaching. They witnessed the beauty and vulnerability of these magnificent creatures and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting our natural heritage.
They also learned about the park's history, the backgrounds of the five remaining elephants, and the importance of caring for and respecting these magnificent animals.
The excursion also fostered teamwork skills and taught the participants how to react appropriately to sudden noises made by the animals.
To conclude the day, the learners enjoyed lunch at the park's café before heading back home. The excursion will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the students, instilling a deeper appreciation for wildlife and conservation efforts. "It was my first time experiencing the elephant park - like some of the learners - and I loved it," says Solomons. "All the excitement and eagerness to learn about elephants was not just seen in their eyes, but ours as educators as well.
"The guides made the experience fun and engaging and gave us a lot of opportunity to ask questions."
