KNYSNA NEWS - On Saturday 1 July, Knysna-based diving adventure company Digo (Dive In God's Ocean) held its first official estuary scuba clean-up at the Knysna Heads.
Digo is a family-owned diving adventure company which was founded by Sanri Maartens and Johan Mastenbroek and the diving duo has been operating since December 2022.
Digo's mission is to preserve the ocean ecosystem and encourage education and appreciation for the oceans.
"We want to reach out to the broader Knysna community and encourage those who have never been, to get in the water," says Johan. They would like to do more community driven clean-ups.
The clean-up consisted of four scuba divers and two snorkellers. The divers entered the waters, adhering to the diving safety procedures, and collected a bunch of fishing gut, sinkers, cans and plastic from the water.
"Since receiving our permit in December, we've made it our mission to clean up and be the custodians of the estuary. We want to take out what doesn't belong in the waters," Johan says.
Following the clean-up, divers take count of what was retrieved.
Items of all shapes and sizes were hauled up to the surface.
