PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The latest report from Plett.Watch, the town's neighbourhood watch group, again highlights why one should always be vigilant about one's safety.
According to Lisa Nagel of Plett.Watch, one incident of concern was a man in a van with tinted windows offering a lift to a group of children in the Longships area.
"The children refused and went back into the shop and then got taken home by a family friend. While this may have been an innocent person willing to assist, it could have been way more insidious," Nagel said.
She urged parents to caution their children not to accept lifts from strangers.
"If they are approached, they should immediately look for assistance from staff at the nearest shop. If they are approached by a stranger, they should run away and shout very loudly if help is not close by. Ask them to take note of numbers in the vehicle registration and any identifying attributes they can remember."
There were also several burglaries in Plettenberg Bay over the weekend.
"As the weather gets better, it gets easier for criminals to move around. Please be extra vigilant at all times and ensure that you are well secured before you go to sleep. Criminals do not only wait for darkness - they are also opportunistic and will notice you going out and will break in swiftly and grab what they can. If you notice strangers lurking in your area, make sure they know you have noticed them and are keeping an eye on them."
She urged residents to check their alarm system at least once a month to ensure that it is in good working order and that the battery is still charged.
"If you have workmen in your house, put away all valuables and close all doors to the rest of your house. While most workers are only doing their jobs and earning a living, there are those that may have other ideas, and seeing valuables and electronics on display is a temptation. Ensure that all valuables are out of reach and sight from windows and workers outside your house. Window shopping is a real thing."
