PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS FLASH - Bitou police have issued a warning about banking safety after a local man was swindled out of more than R3 000 on Monday, January 18.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant Marlene Pieterse, said a fraud case had been opened earlier this week after cash was unlawfully withdrawn from a local man’s bank account.
Pieterse said the 43-year-old man, who has an account with Standard Bank, claimed he had received a phone call from a person claiming to work at Standard Bank.
“The person informed him about a deposit that was made into his bank account and asked the complainant to confirm his details.
He did this and was then asked by the caller to switch his cell phone off.
When he turned the phone back on, he noticed that money, R3 080, had been withdrawn from his bank account,” Pieterse said.
Pieterse warned all account holders not to provide anyone with personal information over the phone, via e-mails or via the internet unless the customer initiated the contact him- or herself or know exactly who they were dealing with.
