PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Visitors to Robberg 1 Beach in Plettenberg Bay may have noticed a new feature - a pair of beautifully designed angel wings fabricated from metal - a feature that the team responsible for creating them hope will become a symbol of love, compassion and hope.
On 21 December the Sabrina Love Foundation officially unveiled the pair of wings under clear blue Bitou skies, smiling faces and a vibrant performance by the Qolweni Choir.
Newly appointed Bitou Mayor, Dave Swart, members of the Bitou Municipality, Plett Tourism and the Sabrina Love family were also present to celebrate this iconic new outdoor artwork that they believe will become a photo-opportunity favourite with tourists.
Caroline Melton Thorpe, of Black Swan Design, designed the elegant angel wings and the metalwork was completed by Cape Town sculptor Charl Bothma. Throughout the unveiling and proceedings, one message was evident: how all are interdependent on one another for a beautiful life.
This is a message the Sabrina Love Foundation has been spreading since it was established in 2004. The foundation was started to care for children with special needs and their families.
Each year, the Sabrina Love Foundation turns Plett bright pink for the Sabrina Love Challenge to raise awareness and funds for its work. The summer challenge has evolved over the years from an ocean swim and beach walk to include cycle routes, trail runs, paddles and a children's event.
In 2020, the Sabrina Love Challenge, adapting to the Covid pandemic, presented a self-timed trail run and cycle route that could be completed in entrants' own time.
This format change allowed the foundation to provide a series of exciting trails for visitors to Plettenberg Bay during the summer season.
The past year's event continued with the adjusted format at the Kurland Estate with a series of trail runs and MTB routes through breathtaking indigenous forest with cool river crossings and over mountain peaks with sweeping views of the area.
With routes ranging from 6km to 40km and a Kids of Steel route, there was something to suit every athlete, family and outdoor enthusiast.
Residents and visitors to Plettenberg Bay are encouraged to visit the sculpture and take a snapshot with the angel wings to share the positive message of Sabrina Love and the beauty of Plettenberg Bay.
