KNYSNA NEWS - Local author and psychologist Santie Pretorius has released her first children's book, titled I am Elephant!, which chronicles the journey of an elephant from its time as a calf right through to becoming a bull.
The book was officially released at a special launch event at African Bean Café on Friday 21 July, which was well attended by friends, loved ones and long-time supporters of Pretorius.
While her first children's book and first work of fiction, it is her second venture into the world of book writing - Pretorius has previously written and self-published the autobiographical Fat genes to Skinny Jeans.
I am Elephant! follows the trials and tribulations of elephant calf JoJo and his close friend Akilah on an incredible journey from their time as calves to becoming fully grown bulls. The dynamic duo take on countless challenges together, overcoming many a hurdle and learning lessons aplenty along the way.
As the reader follows the two on their journey to adulthood, there is much to be learnt about bravery and the power of companionship.
I am Elephant! was illustrated by Sarah Martin, edited by local Viv Segal, and published by BK Publishing. Those looking to grab a copy, can do so by visiting http://bit.ly/IamElephant, or by emailing the author directly at santiepreto@gmail.com.
More about Santie
After training as a psychologist, Santie spent most of her working life in Johannesburg, running teambuilding, conflict resolution, and stress management workshops for corporate clients.
"I relocated to beautiful Knysna in 2007 and have loved it from the moment I arrived," she says. She enjoys hiking, swimming, and sipping espressos in coffee shops.
"I love spending time in the wilderness and have a level II certificate from the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa."
Much like JoJo, Santie's journey started at a very young age. "Since the age of 10, I filled exercise books with stories for my younger sisters.
"No sooner had I finished reading one, than they were hounding me for more. I had a short story published in a magazine while at university, and later published an autobiographical book on Amazon.
"But I am Elephant! has been my most enjoyable writing experience. Working on it was a refuge from the stressful world of Covid and beyond."
Her favourite pastime is hands-down spending time in the wild, which is closely followed by spending time in the wild with friends.
What's next? "When I plan to do something creative, the result is all left-brain and not very good.
"Planning is good for organising my life and getting ready for my next big trip to Kgalagadi. However, with writing I don't sit with my fingers on the keyboard, waiting. But if something stirs and demands to be written, I will write it."
When asked if she could describe the book in one word, Santie proudly answered: "Ubuntu."
