KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna-based singer / songwriter Pierre Opperman recently received his third international music award accreditation, securing fifth spot on the Museboat Musies Awards list of the channel's most popular songs in the past 10 years.
Museboat Live is a 24/7 online music promotion channel featuring listen and chat music shows produced by volunteers.
It airs a wide variety of music on its website, pooling content from all over the world. The main goal of the channel is to offer free multimedia promotion of artists and brands that support the independent music scene. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Museboat announced the top 100 songs from the past decade, as voted for by listeners.
This is where Opperman saw a chance to enter his song, Lady, which he had written, recorded, and produced from his home in February. His song was entered during the fourth of eight rounds of voting, and was a hit with the listeners, securing 14 242 votes in the final round. "I just entered it without any real expectations, so the outcome was a welcome surprise for me, and I am so happy too," Opperman said.
Having grown up in Pretoria, Opperman (60) relocated to Knysna 20 years ago. His love for music started as a child when he received a drum kit in Standard 1 (Grade 3), and has developed to include various other instruments and he now writes, records, and produces all his music from home.
Working in the property maintenance industry, Opperman doesn't see himself as a mainstream singer / songwriter. "I like to consider myself a working class hero in this regard. My music is a part-time thing for me, and has very much become an outlet for my expression," he says.
In 2011 Opperman won the Best New Artist award on Pirate Radio of the Treasure Coast in Florida, USA (2011 Rockstar and Music Treasure Hunt Show), and in 2017 his song Come Alive landed him the Global Music Awards' bronze medal in the adult contemporary / pop category.
