PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The former Eden Sanlam Kay Motsepe u.19 regional champions, Murray High School from Plettenberg Bay, were crowned the champions in the Imizamo Yethu High School Sports Festival after outplaying Royal Academy School 1-0 in a tough final game.
Lakhiwe "Nobhowu" Menze scored the winning goal of the final, which was played at the Imizamo Yethu High School sports field in Thembalethu, George, on 17 May.
In the game the 16-year-old Murray High centre back Ayabonga Mkontwana was a shining star in the back line.
Both semi-finals were determined with penalty shoot-outs, Royal Academy defeating Imizamo Yethu 0(3)-0(0) while Murray High sank Concordia High 0(3)-0(2).
The schools that participated in the festival were Imizamo Yethu (George), Thembalethu High (George), Royal Academy (George), Murray High (Plettenberg Bay), Concordia High (Knysna), Jonga High (George), Hillcrest High (Mossel Bay), Indwe High (Mossel Bay) and Heatherlands High (George).
The final saw both teams looking for opportunities to break through.
Murray High players were playing offensive football, relying on the strengths of Lakhiwe Menze who put pressure on the Royal Academy back line.
Menze scored one goal in the first half, while an attempt by Royal Academy's Dinilethu Harmans failed when his shot was denied by Murray High goalkeeper Aqhamile Mooi.
During the second half there were some excellent touches on the ball by Royal Academy, trying to go into the box, but the Murray High back line's defence was solid.
Menze starred with his skilful forward movements penetrating the Royal Academy back line. He also made an early shot at goal that went over the woodwork. The second half was tight with both sides giving their all, but no more goals were scored.
Someleze Sinkampule of Imizamu Yethu High said the school was proud to host one of the biggest festivals in George and appreciated the schools that helped make memories at the annual festival.
He extended the school's heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors, Nashua, Youth in Action Foundation, Telkom and Garden Route Mall for their generous support.
