PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Kwanokuthula Primary School fell short with 1-0 to Isalathiso Primary from Mossel Bay in a semi-final match at Thembalethu Stadium during the Eden Region Over-aged Schools Tournament last Sunday.
Despite the loss, Kwanokuthula’s boys demonstrated resilience, having qualified for the knock-out stages with a standout 2-0 victory over Tabatha Primary from George in the group stages.
The annual tournament, featuring 14 primary schools from the Eden Region, included Tyholora Primary (George), Mzoxolo Primary (George), Thembalethu Primary (George), MM Mateza Primary (George), Tabatha Primary (George), Isalathiso Primary (Mossel Bay), Garden Route Primary (Mossel Bay), Imekhaya Primary (Mossel Bay), TM Ndanda Primary (Mossel Bay), Chris Nissen Primary (Knysna), Thembelitsha Primary (Knysna), Kwanokuthula Primary (Plettenberg Bay), Phakamisani Primary (Knysna) and Bongolethu Primary (Oudtshoorn).
The event celebrated young talent in soccer, netball and rugby with matches played throughout the day. Programme director Mgcini Sam emphasised the tournament’s importance in promoting sports, particularly rugby among local schools.
“It’s high time our schools take rugby seriously,” Sam said, noting that the event targeted Grade Seven learners who have been less active in sports. Sam also expressed his gratitude to all the participating schools for their commitment to primary school sports.
In rugby, Thembelitsha Primary (Knysna) clinched the girls’ division with a tight 22-20 win over Chris Nissen Primary (Knysna). In the boys’ division, Chris Nissen Primary triumphed, defeating Bongolethu Primary 17-12 to claim the title.
In netball, Tabatha Primary edged out Tyholora Primary 5-4 in a closely contested final.
For soccer, Thembalethu Primary’s girls won 3-1 on penalties against MM Mateza Primary after a 0-0 draw, while Isalathiso Primary’s boys secured the title with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Thembalethu Primary, also following a 0-0 draw.
