NATIONAL NEWS - Skywatchers in Greenland, Iceland and parts of Spain will be among those in the best position to experience the full eclipse.

During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the Sun for a short period, turning daytime skies dark and potentially causing a noticeable drop in temperature.

Animals may also respond to the sudden change in light, with some species behaving as though night has arrived.

While South Africans will not be able to see the total eclipse, parts of the northern United States will experience a partial eclipse.

For those lucky enough to be in the path of totality, the event promises to be a memorable astronomical spectacle.

So, if you happen to find yourself under the right skies on Wednesday, remember to look up – safely, of course.

Never look directly at the Sun without proper certified eclipse or solar-viewing glasses, even during a partial eclipse.
