SEDGEFIELD NEWS - An accident outside Sedgefield this morning claimed the life of one of the drivers, while the other escaped injury.
The N2 has been reopened.
The accident happened a few 100 metres before the Engen garage on the N2 towards George at about 09:00, and involved a Nissan bakkie and a truck transporting Volkswagen vehicles.
The two vehicles collided, with the truck swerving off the road about 100m from where the initial impact occurred.
According to ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring, when their paramedics arrived on scene, they "found the Metro and Metro Rescue Services already in attendance. A wrecked bakkie was found lying on the side of the road with a man found lying trapped inside."
The road was subsequently closed by road traffic officials while paramedics attended to the man in the bakkie.
"Local authorities closed off the road while Rescue Service used specialized rescue equipment to free the man from the vehicle," Meiring said. The AMS Medical helicopter was even called to the scene to provide further medical assistance.
Once the man had been freed from the wreck, paramedics began to initiate CPR and several advanced life support interventions. "Unfortunately, after some time, the man succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead," Meiring said.
Despite an initial report from the Knysna-Plett Herald stating that the man had been airlifted and then succumbed to his injuries, that is incorrect as he died on scene.
Meiring also confirmed that the driver of the truck escaped injury.
