PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - History enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to learn more about the tragedy that led to the first European settlement in Plettenberg Bay more than 400 years ago.
The Van Plettenberg Historical Society will be hosting a talk on 16 February about the São Gonçalo, a Portuguese trading ship, which sank in 1630 during a violent storm on the coast, where Plettenberg Bay is today.
About 100 men survived the ordeal and settled in Piesang Valley for about eight months before leaving in boats they had made themselves.
