KNYSNA NEWS - Work hard, respect others, and don't be afraid to fail. This was the final message shared by veteran educator Selvin Hannie (58) during a special retirement assembly held at Sunridge Primary School last Tuesday, 24 March, where three dedicated staff members who are retiring from the school were honoured.
Hannie devoted an impressive 38 years of service to the school, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and inspiration. He said that his decision to retire early follows the government's early retirement package, an initiative aimed at making room for entry-level educators.
Although unsure of his next step, Hannie shared that he may "dust off the bicycle" and take up cycling again. He said he will remain active and continue to be part of the Multisure Knysna United Rugby team.
Also retiring is Elwin Petersen, who served as head of department (HOD) for nine years. Petersen intends to now pursue his passion for ministering.
He said that he will cherish the memories made and encouraged learners to enjoy their school years to the fullest.
Nico McKock, the school's long-serving janitor, also said his farewells. A deeply spiritual man, McKock said that he previously worked at Fraaisig Primary School as a general worker. Upon joining Sunridge Primary, his dream of becoming a janitor was realised, something he remains grateful for. He said he had lived out his dream job and will miss it dearly. He encouraged learners to always give their best, even when times are tough.
In his closing remarks, Hannie delivered a heartfelt message to both learners and colleagues.
"To the learners - you are the reason schools exist. Not the buildings, not the rules, not even the teachers, but you," he said.
Addressing fellow educators, he added: "Teaching is not an easy profession. It requires a lot and often gives very little recognition in return. But what we do matters - sometimes in ways we will never see."
The assembled learners and teachers gave an emotional thanks to the three retirees for their years of dedication and wished them well in their next chapter.
