PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - "I got one million views…" go the lyrics to the popular Goldfish song. This now also rings true for Plett Tourism's YouTube channel, which hit one million views this month.
The success is largely due to one video that went viral after it was published in August last year.
The video is the production of local resident Daron Chatz who compiled the footage of Plettenberg Bay's attempt at the Jerusalema Challenge, which has chalked up more than 940 000 views since it was published.
On 22 August, Plett residents and visitors came together in a big way for what is, to our knowledge, the biggest group Jerusalema dance challenge.
About 700 people lined Main Street in the coastal holiday town and in perfect harmony showed off their moves to the Master KG hit.
Sparked by the infectious beat of the South African musician's single, the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge spread across the globe. While the original music video, which premiered in December 2019 and features female vocalist Nomcebo Zikode, has amassed more than 71 million views, it was the dance moves of a few friends in Angola that got the challenge underway when they posted their choreography on YouTube in February this year.
The challenge has also become synony-mous with spreading positivity during the harrowing time of the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.
"Thanks to one video in particular which went viral, we now have over a million views on our YouTube channel and this figure is still climbing," said Plett Tourism chief executive Patty Butterworth.
However, the Jerusalema challenge was not the only thing that had boost their YouTube channel, but most of their online and social media platforms continued to grow in popularity.
The Plett Tourism website has enjoyed on average 13 723 visits per month and 27 103 page views every month.
Butterworth said a total of 228 newsletters have been sent out to date and there are 6 180 subscribers. On Instagram, Plett Tourism has 9 043 and on Facebook 24 167. The Plett Tourism Facebook page has also seen 18 460 likes, 6,4 million three-second video views and 2,9-million video minute views over the past year.
On Twitter the tourism body has 6 007 followers and on YouTube more than 1 million views and 2 595 subscribers.
